Effective date: August 22, 2025

OA Highlight is a Chrome extension that lets you send selected text to the search engines you choose. We designed it to be simple and private: your selection goes from your browser to the search site; we don’t run servers for this product.

If you have questions, contact us at support@oachallenge.com.

Summary

  • We act on selected text only after you click the extension button or context-menu.
  • Your selection is sent directly to the search engine you choose; no data is sent to OA Highlight servers.
  • We store only your settings (which engines/options you’ve enabled) locally in Chrome storage.
  • We don’t sell data, run ads, or track background browsing.

What we collect and why

Selected text (user-initiated)

  • What: The text you highlight and choose to search.
  • Why: To perform the search you requested in your chosen engine(s).
  • Where it goes: Directly to the selected search engine as a query parameter.

Page info (optional, feature-dependent)

  • What: In limited cases, OA Highlight may read the current tab’s URL or title if you enable features that include them in the query (e.g., “search this site”).
  • Why: To build the query you asked for.
  • What we don’t do: We do not monitor or store your browsing history.

Settings

  • What: Your OA Highlight preferences (enabled engines, shortcuts, options).
  • Where: Stored locally via Chrome storage.
  • Why: So your configuration persists between sessions.

We do not collect names, emails, passwords, financial data, messages, precise location, device identifiers, or background browsing activity.

How data flows

  1. You select text and click OA Highlight (toolbar or right-click menu).
  2. The extension builds a query from your selection (and, if you enabled it, limited page info).
  3. Your browser opens the search results page in a new tab.
  4. Nothing is sent to OA Highlight’s servers.

Because OA Highlight opens third-party search sites, your queries are subject to those sites’ privacy policies.

Permissions we request

  • contextMenus: Adds a right-click action to search highlighted text on demand.
  • tabs: Opens search results in new tabs and may read the active tab’s URL/title only to build a feature you invoke.
  • storage: Saves your extension settings locally.

We do not download or execute remote code.

Advertising, sharing, and selling

  • We do not sell your data.
  • We do not use your data for advertising or profiling.
  • We don’t share data with third parties beyond sending your query to the search engine you chose.

Your choices & controls

  • Don’t use it: If you don’t click OA Highlight, it does nothing.
  • Clear local data: Remove the extension in chrome://extensions and/or clear extension data in your browser.
  • Search engine settings: Manage cookies and history with each search provider you use.

Security

  • Queries open via normal browser navigation (HTTPS where supported by the search site).
  • Settings are stored using Chrome’s extension storage.

Children’s privacy

OA Highlight is not intended for children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from them.

International users / your rights

We do not maintain user databases. If you contact us about privacy rights (e.g., GDPR/CCPA), we’ll explain how to delete local data and manage history with your search providers.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we’ll update the effective date at the top and describe changes on this page.
